Frequently Asked Questions

In an effort to supply you with more information before you contact a rescue representative, we are providing you with answers to the most frequently asked questions. Please remember that each and every rescue person is a volunteer and do this out of their love for Jack Russells.

Owner Surrender

  1. Did you get your dog from a breeder? If so, have you contacted the breeder?
Good breeders will either take their dog back or assist you in re-homing your dog. It is usually a faster avenue than the rescue program. Please do this before contacting a Rescue representative. If not, please contact the representative that handles your state.

  2. How long does it take for you to find a new home for my dog?
Please remember that it has to be the right home for your dog. There is no definitive answer. It could be a week; it could take several months. We are dependent on applications. The new home must pass our screening process and fit the needs of your JRT. We know that you want the best home for your JRT and this can take time.

  3. Who should I contact/email about surrendering my dog into your program?
Only contact the representative listed on the Contact page that handles your state. Emails sent to every representative in surrounding areas are all forwarded back to the representative in your state. That is the person who will assist you. Please be considerate when calling a representative and call during reasonable hours. Calls made early in the morning and late at night are not the best times to call. Most volunteers work and cannot take calls at early/late times. If there is no rescue representative listed for the state in which you reside and you are an owner looking to find a new home for your JRT, please use our contact form.

  4. What are your requirements for my dog to come into your rescue program?
As a general rule, your JRT must be spayed or neutered, up to date on its shots and current on its heartworm. The best course of action is to contact the representative in your state.

  5. My dog bit someone - I need to find another home.
We are sorry but we do not accept biting or aggressive dogs into our rescue program. However, we will be happy to speak with you about suggestions and provide you with possible options, such as our direct owner referral service and/or behavioral advice. Sometimes only a little bit of behavior modification is needed or possible vet care. It is always best to discuss the situation with your state rescue representative. If there is no representative listed for the state in which you reside, please use our contact form.

  6. Where are you located? I am moving in a week and I can't take my dog.
We are a rescue adoption program and do not have a facility and very limited foster care available. Please contact the representative in your state to discuss possible options but as a general rule, you will need to keep your dog until a suitable home is found. We are unable to assist you with such short notice.

  7. My dog is mixed but mostly JRT.
We are sorry but we are a full breed rescue and do not take mixes into our program. If there is a question as to whether or not your dog is mixed, please contact your representative via email and provide them with a picture.

  8. Is there a fee to put my dog into your program?
Yes, you should be prepared to pay a surrender fee. In most areas, the fee is $50.00. This fee goes towards finding the right home for your dog.
