Location: Dallas, Texas
Dog Name: Bernie
Sex: Male
Known Issues: Fractured Leg; Needs surgery
Background
Bernie Hi! My name is Bernie. I was a stray and picked up by the Fort Worth TX shelter. Something happened to my leg. I can not really remember but I think a car or truck hit me. It is all kind of blurred. Miss Ginger Leach at the Fort Worth Shelter called my foster Mom with RRI. Miss Ginger told my foster Mom I was a good dog that gave her kisses. She also sent a pic of me to her. My foster Mom liked my looks and came to visit with me at the shelter. Lucky for me I was rescued on Sept 2 by RRI!

I went to see Dr. Norris. I got an exam and X-Rays. Dr. Norris said I had a non union fracture and that I needed surgery. He showed my X-Rays to Dr. Turner who is an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Turner said I need a plate and a bone graph. Geez! I am trying not to think of what I will be going thru. I overheard them telling my foster Mom that surgery will last a long time. I am trying to be brave! I am doing everything my foster Mom wants me to do.

Well, I will be going in for surgery on Oct 9. I will let you know how it goes. I am a little apprehensive but I am putting on a brave face for everyone!

Progress Updates
November 19 - From Bernie

Bernie HI! It has been 6 weeks since my surgery. I wanted to give you an update. I am doing very well. I had to wear that stupid hat part of the time so I would leave my bandage alone. My foster Mom said I was a very good patient. I put my leg down most of the time now and walk on it. Sometimes I pull it up. I think it is habit. My leg was broken for a pretty long time.

Thanksgiving is almost here. I have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful for Ms. Leach calling my foster Mom and getting me out of the shelter. I am thankful that RRI came to get me. I am thankful for the wonderful vets, Dr. Norris and Dr. Turner and Ms. Jessica for helping me to get better. I am thankful for all the staff at Buckner Terrace Animal Clinic for taking wonderful care of me. I am thankful to my foster Grand Mom for taking care of me during my recuperation. I am VERY THANKFUL to all the people who donated to the cost of my surgery. Your kindness and generosity is very much appreciated. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wish I could meet each and every one of you. I would give you a BIG KISS! I am so thankful that I have use of my leg. I can’t wait till I can run and play.

I have 6 more weeks of recuperation. I will be in touch. I hope you have a VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

October 13 - From Bernie
Bernie Hi! It is Bernie again.

I had my surgery for a non union fracture. The fracture had to be stabilized with a bone plate. Everything went REALLY well! It lasted a little more than two hours. Dr. Turner was able to use bone from my leg for the bone graph. Dr. Norris monitored my status. Miss Jessica Johnson was my nurse. She monitored my heart on an Electrocardiogram and took really good care of me. My foster Mom came to visit me after surgery. When I saw her I tried to get up. Everyone told me to lie back down. I am a good dog so I did what I was told.
