Jack Russell Terrier in need of medical assistance
Last Update: June 4, 2007
Location: Branden, Florida
Dog Name: Lola
Sex: Female
Age: 2 years
Known Issues: Gangrene in leg
Background
Lola This 2 yr old female JRT was brought into the emergency vet clinic in Brandon FLA . After she was found limping and wandering around by a good Samaritan. She was scanned for a mirco chip but had none. The vet examined the dog only to find her leg swollen with out any feeling in it. There was a small area on her leg that appeared to be a spider bite the vet explored the bite only to find that the leg was full of gangrene. This girl had a high fever from the infection she was put on IV fluids and a painkiller.

The vet stabilized her and the good Samaritan went home to find help for this girl. He contacted a FLA RRI rep Aude Sumner and she contacted the vet to offer help. Her treatment lasted throughout the night. Aude was called by the vet and was told the leg was so bad it had to be amputated. She was dubbed "Tripod" because of the leg and she is pretty as a picture. Her vet expenses where $2065.00. Please help us defray her cost so we can help the next JRT in need. She is truly lucky as she has already found a new home and soon a new name (Lola)!

Progress updates are posted below.

Progress Updates
June 4 - From Tracy Walker
This is Lola. We introduce her to everyone because she is a one and only.

Lola In April I had to take our other JRT, Booboo to the emergency vet. Of course we thought he had swallowed something, well he hadn’t, but while I was waiting for him to come back from x rays, another vet came in and asked me if I owned the other JRT. He said he had never done anything like this and immediately I thought something had happened to Booboo. Well, he asked if I would be interested in another JRT, a female.

Apparently, a man found her on the streets with a black foot and gangrene going up her left leg. The vet contacted Russell Rescue and they took responsibility for her. Audie Sumner from Ft. Lauderdale told them she would pay for the surgery, sight unseen. Well, my family can not thank them enough. The vet told me he would give my information to them, if I was interested. Once I saw her sweet face, I could not help it. MaryLu Kinlaw came and picked her up and took her to stay at her home until I could convince my husband that he really wanted Lola, well that did not take long, she won him over in a matter of days.

LolaLola and Booboo get along great, they chase each other around the house and love to go outside and play in the yard. Lola hunts for lizards in our bushes and Booboo handles the larger game, like squirrels. They are quite the pair. And yes, with 3 legs, she is just as fast as he is. They do not like to be separated, they will stand at the door and cry for the other one.

I was nervous about getting a 3 legged dog, but Lola is such a great girl, she loves to be loved on, dressing up and yes, chasing lizards. She has not let missing a leg effect her. I read a website about tripod dogs and the owners were saying how there dog was not adjusting to it. Not so with Lola - she is so sweet, energetic and fun, that I don’t think she even knows she is missing a leg. We are wanting to get her involved in service work to visit amputee children in the hospital, to encourage them. She has been such a great addition to our family. We cannot thank Audie and MaryLu enough.

We will keep you posted about Lola’s adventures.

Tracy
