Hit by car; subluxating hip; needs surgery to remove femur ball |
Sophie is a 6 year old JRT from Florida. The Saturday previous
to Memorial day, the dog ran away without the owner's knowledge, and when
the dog came back she was limping. The emergency vet was certain she was hit by a car -- it caused her hip to come out of the socket (subluxating hip) ... the vet popped the hip back in, but it came
out the next day. The vet informed the owners surgery would be required
to remove the ball of the femur. They owners decided they couldn't afford to fix the dog and have given her up to Russell Rescue.
Progress updates from will be posted as we receive them.

August 23 - From Webmaster, RRI
I have learned that Lynda, Sophie's foster mother, has decided she will keep her so now Sophie has a permanent home. Congrats to Sophie! Thanks to everyone who helped Sophie.

July 2 - From Jenn Carr, Russell Rescue
Rather than removing the ball of the femur, as expected, the vet was able to rebuild the socket
around Sophie's hip and pin the bones into place. She presently has her injured leg bandaged to her body to immobilize it. Lynda, her foster mom, has to carry her in and out to do her business, but Sophie doesn't seem to mind. She is a very loving girl and enjoys spending time with her foster mom.

June 29 - From Lynda, Sophie's foster mom
Sophie is doing really well - she hasn't needed any of her pills other
than the antibiotic, which she gets twice a day. Her checkup with the
doctor is on July 8th, so we'll know more after that. She is a sweet
girl, and a pleasure to have.
Right now her leg is bandaged to her body so she can't move the hip, but
she moves around well on three legs. Maybe once that bandage comes off we
can take some better pictures of her.

Sophie had her surgery. She received a morphine patch and once it loses its effectiveness, she will be on Rymadil. She is also on Clavamox for antibiotics. She will be in a sling for a couple of weeks and will need to be carried outside, then on crate rest.

June 24 - From Jenn Carr, Russell Rescue
Sophie's surgery was performed last night. Please note that she is looking for a home in Florida ASAP.
