Pearl’s surgery is scheduled for July 15th!

She will be spayed, have several skin tags removed, and get her teeth cleaned.  She will also get a few rotten teeth extracted. We appreciate your donations so very much.

We reached our fundraising goal for Pearl! Thank you so very much to those of you who donated! We couldn’t do it without your support. And thank you for all the well wishes and prayers for little Pearl. She is well on her way to recovery.

Her foster mom, Robyn, will be scheduling her surgery soon, and we will update you and let you know how Pearl is doing. Thank you again, so very much! We appreciate you, and Pearl says thank you!

You will remember this little gal from her posts earlier this Summer (see below).  Pearl was pulled from a shelter in San Antonio in May. The volunteers described her as a dog who could be the poster child for abuse and neglect.  Her foster mom, Robyn, said that in the 20 years she has worked with Russell Rescue, Pearl is one of the 2 most damaged dogs we have ever taken in. Pearl was riddled with infections on every part of her body.  She was raw, sore, weak, sick and demoralized. She has now recovered enough that we can have her spayed, remove all the skin tags, and get a dental. Her little eyes are damaged from having “dry eye”. She will always need drops, but her eyes don’t need to be removed, as we had first thought.  Pearl is the sweetest and friendliest girl. Her little tail wags all the time. We are hopeful that she will make a full recovery! But we need your help to make that possible!

The vet estimates that the bill for Pearl’s spay surgery, skin tag removal and dental will be around $500.  Pearl is a sweet little gal who deserves a chance at a healthy life. She is only about 4 years old, so she has a long life ahead of her.

Check out the photos and videos of Pearl.  As you can see, she has made great progress since May.  Her foster mom has given her lots of good food, good medicine and a lot of TLC.  But little Pearl has a long way to go before we can begin the process of finding her a forever family.  Pearl must get the surgery she needs before she can be adopted.

We got an update on Pearl this week from her foster mom, Robyn!  Read below to see how she is doing! We will update again soon!

“First:  I got to have a bath.  Aunt Foster used that smelly shampoo, but it feels real good to be brushed-scrubbed all over real gently in warm, soapy water.  Then we went to the vet, (I didn’t like that! Blood tests, ow, ow, ow!!!) But THEN! Because I was so good, we went to WalMart and I got to ride in the basket and we got a treat and got some pets and rubs from real nice people.  We had a treat at the bakery section, YUM!! Whew, I am worn out! My main man, Dr. C. says I am doing well, but still have a long way to go.”

We got a couple new pics today from Pearl’s foster mom, Robyn.  She says Pearl is doing very well. She has settled in and made herself right at home.  Pearl’s skin is looking much better after 3 sulfur shampoos and one sulfur dip. Pearl has discovered that she can jump up on the bed and really enjoys rolling around in the soft blankets.

Here she is this morning after breakfast. All that eating and playing made her tired! Overall, she is doing much better. Pearl goes back to see Dr. C in another week for a follow up and to determine what needs to be done about her eye issues.  She also will need to be spayed and have a few moles removed. But, she is well on her way to recovery!

We got an update on Pearl today from her foster mom, Robyn.  Pearl had a vet visit on Friday. Even after only 3 days in her foster home, you can tell she is feeling better.  Check out her video link below. We will update again soon!

“Pearl went to the vet Friday.  Dr. C thinks that all of her problems are due to massive infections.  The good things are: She is only about 4 years old. She is heartworm negative.  She has pretty good teeth. And, her blood work was good. At the vet, she got 2 different eye drops.  She also got ear wash and ear drops. She is now eating a special food – Science Diet for Sensitive Skin and Stomach.  She has a lime-sulfur dip and has to be dipped everyday. She also has a special shampoo. She is taking prednisone and ketoconazole pills.  Pearl still has several things that need to be addressed. She needs to be spayed and have a few moles removed. She also needs to have her eye issues addressed.  She goes back to Dr. C in 2 weeks. For now she is going to be medicated, eat and sleep!”

Pearl’s Story

This is the newest member of the Russell Rescue family.  Say hello to Pearl. She was on death row in San Antonio, Texas just a day or two ago.  The volunteers described her as a dog who could be the poster child for abuse and neglect.  Her skin is red and flaking. She has infected ears, skin, and teeth. She is missing much of her fur and possibly has ulcers on her eyes.  Even with all that, the volunteers described her as still being sweet and very trusting. Pearl was picked up yesterday from the shelter by Russell Rescue volunteer, Debi, and spent the night there.  She arrived at her foster home this morning. Robyn, her foster mom, will make sure she gets the vetting and care she needs to begin her journey to recovery. Pearl has a long road ahead of her. We will update you on her journey, and we will work to give her the happy and healthy life that she deserves!  In the meantime, she will be spoiled gently until she is as beautiful outside as she is inside! Russell Rescue Needs Your Help!

Update: April 19, 2019

Sweet little Bridget had her surgery on Wednesday the 17th and is home resting and recovering.  The doctor had to remove 6 teeth and also clean and scrape all the remaining teeth, then stitch up the holes.

Ouch! Bridget also had a lump on her shoulder that had to be removed. You can see her stitches in the photo.  Bridget had the best care in the world from Dr. Mark Schuman, Virginia, Miss Tracy, and Amber. They are a great team and we appreciate them so very much!

They took great care of our little girl! Bridget has had quite a bit of pain, but her foster mom is giving her good meds and lots of TLC. She is doing a lot of sleeping today.  Thank you to the donors who made this life-saving surgery possible. Bridget will now have a chance at a healthy and happy life.

Bridget

This precious little gal is Bridget, and she needs our help!  Bridget is a sweet little senior Jack Russell that has a mouth full of rotten and infected teeth.  As you can see from the photos, her teeth are in very bad condition.

Her back teeth are a greenish/blackish color, and the infection is poisoning her little body.  The vet says that most of her teeth will have to come out and that she will need stitches. Bridget’s bad teeth are causing her pain and need to be fixed as soon as possible!

Ten years ago Robyn pulled a beautiful little rough coat female out of Austin Animal Control. She was about 5 years old and Robyn named her Bridget. A month later we adopted her to Ginger Jones. Ginger had moved from Houston to Wimberly to get away from the bad weather in Houston. We took Bridget to her home. It was a perfect fit. We heard from Ginger several times after that. She loved Bridget and said she was the perfect fit. Three-four years after that she again got in touch with Robyn. She wanted to give Bridget back. She said she had had some health problems and could not care for Bridget. Robyn told her she would take Bridget back, of course. A few days later Ginger said her “caretaker” would take Bridget. She was relieved that Bridget would be cared for by someone she knew and trusted.

Fast forward to April of 2019.

Robyn and I got an email from a shelter manager in San Marcos. Someone had picked up an elderly female JRT about 12-14 years old. A picture was attached. I saw a dirty, dejected, bedraggled dog standing there with her head down and her eyes squinted. About 4 or 5 hours later our FB admin, Heather, sent us a screen shot of a posting from a woman named Cathleen who was looking for information about a dog in the San Marcos shelter that had a microchip that traced back to an address in Wimberly. She posted her phone number.

Robyn called Cathleen. Cathleen told Robyn that she is dedicated to reuniting lost pets and their owners. She works with shelters in the Wimberly/San Marcos area. She wanted to help the senior JRT. After much snooping and checking and digging she had discovered that it was Ginger Jones’ dog. Ginger however had moved back to Houston. Cathleen found Ginger on FB. When Cathleen called Ginger to tell her that Bridget was in the San Marcos Shelter Ginger said, “ Call Robyn Reed.” Ginger was shocked to discover that her “caretaker” had betrayed her. As Ginger had suffered a stroke and was partially paralyzed, she could not care for Bridget. She tried hard to be sure her dog was cared for. She had been sending the woman 50 dollars a month for Bridget’s care! Bridget was never cared for. The poor dog had somehow gotten away from the caretaker and wandered off. That is when she was picked up and taken to the shelter.

Robyn picked Bridget up the next day. She was bathed, fed, and snuggled in. The next day she got her to the vet. Bridget was sick. Her teeth are so horribly infected that she is nauseated and weak. Most of her teeth will have to be pulled.  Note: Bridget is now a Spotlight terrier.

From now on, Bridget will be cared for.

Huge thanks to Cathleen and the shelter manager for going the extra mile for a sweet little old dog. It restores my faith in humanity.

Feb 12 Update

Feb 7 -We got an update on Cappy from his foster mom!

Cappy is doing well. He is starting to put his leg down a little bit, so that is good progress!  He has a good appetite and is eating well and seems to be happy. He has a couple of nurses taking care of him, as you can see from the photo.  He had a follow up at the vet this week because a couple of his sutures were coming out. The vet put staples in to keep the incision together. Other than that, Cappy is doing great!

Update on Cappy!  Cappy had his surgery yesterday!  His foster mom said he is on good pain medication and slept through the night last night.  Today, he is eating and walking, so that’s a good sign. He has had quite a bit of pain, but his foster mom is taking good care of him.  He should be feeling better soon. Thank you so much to those of you who have donated to Cappy’s fundraiser so far.
